Lost in Translation.... reallly....
Today a chinese lady came to the surgery.
She has very limited spoken English.
The doctor looked at me " So, can u translate?"
mE: 0_O i can try but i only speak cantonese, even tat isn't perfect.
doctor: "Well, let see whether she speaks Cantonese then"
Doctor looked at the chinese lady..." do u speak cantonese?"
Lady: Sorry.. err ... my english is very bad...I speak Mandarin
Doctor turned to me .....expecting me to say something or do something
~gulp~
Me: hmmm i don't speak Mandarin but i can understand most of it i guess...I can try...*sweat*
the chinese lady looked at me ...ready to converse with me in Mandarin, judging that i am a chinese and i should be able to speak...
(don't look at me like this, even my cantonese sucks...(i am a cantonese) how am i gonna converse with u in Mandarin)
Well, i just smiled...
Lady: I know Cantonese a bit ( in Mandarin with broken Cantonese here and there)
Bla bla... turned out she just gave birth and she has breast pain.
Intepreted it for the doctor and the doctor asked me to ask her this and that...
*smokes coming out from my head*
speaking in super super broken Mandarin with Cantonese and English...almost fainted..*stress*
A series of difficult questions followed..and she was desperately explaining to me in Mandarin with full expressions....
Turned to my doctor- errr.... i just summarised it and gave the important points. Most of it i wasn't too sure too... o_O
The doctor asked me to tell her that he's giving her antibiotic and painkillers like ibuprofen or paracetamol and if the pain or swelling persists she must go to the hospital. Or she could ring her midwife who was taking care her... *almost coughing up blood*
RIGHHHTtt.....
First, how to say ANTIBIOTIC in Cantonese or Mandarin??
sigh... but i aced in saying PAINKILLER...muahahaha..."chi tong yok" ..and she understood me..she mentioned something about medicine for infection ...and i just nodded..i supposed it is antibiotics right..it is for infection...right? right??
SECOND, MIDWIFE?????
wut? how the hell do i know how to say that in Cantonese...dun even talk about in Mandarin.. sigh...
Doctor: Oh,ask her whether is she allergic to Penicillin?
Me: *eyes bulging* WUT? PENICILLIN? how la.....
Tried my very best to ask her whether she got rashes or not if she takes this drugs called penicillin...and she shook her head indicating no rash.
I doubt she knows what penicillin is... she doesn't even know what paracetamol is..
But but.. i managed to tell her that if it gets worse, she should go to the hospital. She nodded and said some words in Mandarin that i am familiar with... like pain and hospital...
I guess she should be on the right track...
Then we bid goodbye..she thanked me as if i saved the world...
and the ...Doctor: " phew.. thanks! lucky u were here to translate for us"
Me: err...no worries....
Personally,I didn't think that was a good consultation .....half of the time 3 of us were soooo confused! and i was the main key person intepreting it... i might have said something wrong...
oh God, i pray to u that the lady is gonna be okay...
How i wish now that my dad had sent me to a chinese school. Or at least speak to me in Mandarin..wait..even their Cantonese is equally as bad as mine...lolz....maybe they should have sent me for chinese tuition or something....
i need to watch more chinese shows...=)
Arghh...suddenly i felt what a disgrace...being chinese but not able to converse properly...
*A taxi driver told me once that i should be ashamed that i wasn't able to speak in Mandarin*
but but... i don't really look chinese... so i can skip that part right.... lolz..
HMph..on second tot, yeahh.. i should be.....
I am determined to learn CHINESE/Mandarin....from now on... maybe i should enrol in some chinese class or something....
a chinese gal in a freaking chinese class..prob. filled with ang mohs... wut a joke!
