} }); </script>  <div id="content">  <div id="main"><div id="main2"> <h1 id="blog-mobile-title"> <a href="http://yvinne.blogspot.com/"> ^MacHead eats an aPPle A day^ </a> </h1> <p id="description-mobile"></p> <h2 class="date-header">Thursday, November 01, 2007</h2>  <div class="post"><a name="4097635981985299168"></a> <h3 class="post-title"> Lost in Translation.... reallly.... </h3> <div class="post-body"> <p> <div style="clear:both;"></div><span style="color:#33ccff;"><span style="font-size:130%;">Today a chinese lady came to the surgery.</span><br /></span><br />She has very limited spoken English.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><span style="color:#ffff33;">The doctor looked at me " So, can u translate?"</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#ff99ff;">mE: 0_O i can try but i only speak cantonese, even tat isn't perfect.</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#ffff00;">doctor: "Well, let see whether she speaks Cantonese then"</span><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Doctor looked at the chinese lady<span style="color:#ffff00;">..." do u speak cantonese?"</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#33ff33;">Lady: Sorry.. err ... my english is very bad...I speak Mandarin</span><br /><br />Doctor turned to me .....expecting me to say something or do something<br /><span style="color:#ff0000;">~gulp~</span><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><span style="color:#ff99ff;">Me: hmmm i don't speak Mandarin but i can understand most of it i guess...I can try</span><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="color:#ff0000;">...*sweat*</span><br /></span><br />the chinese lady looked at me ...ready to converse with me in Mandarin, judging that i am a chinese and i should be able to speak...<br /><br /><span style="color:#66ffff;">(don't look at me like this, even my cantonese sucks...(<em><span style="color:#ff0000;">i am a cantonese</span></em>) how am i gonna converse with u in Mandarin)</span><br /><br />Well, i just smiled...<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><span style="color:#33ff33;">Lady: I know Cantonese a bit (<em> <span style="color:#ff0000;">in Mandarin with broken Cantonese here and there</span></em>)</span><br /><br />Bla bla... turned out she just gave birth and she has breast pain.<br /><br />Intepreted it for the doctor and the doctor asked me to ask her this and that...<br /><br /><em><span style="color:#ff0000;">*smokes coming out from my head*</span><br /><span style="color:#ff0000;">speaking in super super broken Mandarin with Cantonese and English...almost fainted..*stress*</span></em><br /><br /><p><span style="color:#ff99ff;"></span></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><br />A series of difficult questions followed..and she was desperately explaining to me in Mandarin with full expressions....<br /><br />Turned to my doctor- errr.... i just summarised it and gave the important points. Most of it i wasn't too sure too...<span style="font-size:130%;color:#ff0000;"> o_O</span><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /><br />The doctor asked me to tell her that he's giving her antibiotic and painkillers like ibuprofen or paracetamol and if the pain or swelling persists she must go to the hospital. Or she could ring her midwife who was taking care her... <span style="color:#ff99ff;"><em>*almost coughing up blood*</em></span><br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;color:#ff0000;">RIGHHHTtt.....</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#ff0000;">First, how to say <span style="font-size:130%;">ANTIBIOTIC</span> in Cantonese or Mandarin??</span></p><p></p><p>sigh... but i aced in saying PAINKILLER...muahahaha..."chi tong yok" ..and she understood me..she mentioned something about medicine for infection ...and i just nodded..i supposed it is antibiotics right..it is for infection...right? right??<br /><br /><br /><span style="color:#ff0000;">SECOND, </span><span style="font-size:130%;color:#ff0000;"><span style="color:#ff0000;">MIDWIFE</span>?????</span></p><p></p><p>wut? how the hell do i know how to say that in Cantonese...dun even talk about in Mandarin.. sigh... </p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><br /><br /><span style="color:#ffff00;">Doctor: Oh,ask her whether is she allergic to Penicillin?</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#ff99ff;">Me: *eyes bulging* <span style="font-size:130%;">WUT?</span></span> <span style="font-size:130%;color:#ff0000;">PENICILLIN?</span> <span style="color:#ff99ff;">how la.....</span><br /><br />Tried my very best to ask her whether she got rashes or not if she takes this drugs called penicillin...and she shook her head indicating no rash.<br /><br />I doubt she knows what penicillin is... she doesn't even know what paracetamol is..<br /><br /><br /><br /></p><p></p><p><br /><br />But but.. i managed to tell her that if it gets worse, she should go to the hospital. She nodded and said some words in Mandarin that i am familiar with... like pain and hospital...<br /><br />I guess she should be on the right track...<br /><br />Then we bid goodbye..she thanked me as if i saved the world...<br /><br />and the ...<span style="color:#ffff66;">D</span><span style="color:#ffff00;">octor: " phew.. thanks! lucky u were here to translate for us"</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#ff99ff;">Me: err...no worries....</span></p><p></p><p><br /></p><p></p><p><br />Personally,I didn't think that was a good consultation .....half of the time 3 of us were soooo confused! and i was the main key person intepreting it... i might have said something wrong...<br /><br />oh God, i pray to u that the lady is gonna be okay...<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />How i wish now that my dad had sent me to a chinese school.
